How Cameras Work

by Josh Wilson on April 2, 2010

This week we’ll be talking about the basics of how a camera works. This is a bit of a crash course and I’m going to whip through it as quickly as possible. Sorry for the dry technical bits – there’s no good way around them. Hopefully in trade for the pain you’ll have a better idea of how your camera works.

Two Tools Intro

by Josh Wilson on March 24, 2010

Hi Friends,

I’d like to tell you a bit about an upcoming series of posts I’m working on that deals with the hands on part of telling your story. For most situations all you really need is a point & shoot camera and a Mac. For those of you without a Mac, I’ll be attempting to adapt the Mac specific parts of this series for the PC later on. I’m not as familiar with what’s out there for Windows, so that’s going to serve as a learning experience for me. [read more…]

Being Specific Without a Destination

February 22, 2010

One of the quickest ways to loose followers is to be ambiguous about what you are doing and how your followers can get involved. Waving your hand in a northerly direction and saying “We’re heading sort of that way…” doesn’t instill confidence in your expeditionary team. Even Lewis and Clark had something specific in mind [...]

Expecting Responses

February 15, 2010

Dear Friends,
Don’t know about you, but I often find myself in somewhat awkward group situations. I’m a bit of an introvert, and when you put a bunch of introverts in a room together you often get the same effect that letting the clutch out on a car gives you – whiplash followed by a stall. [...]

Outsourcing Compassion

February 8, 2010

“What in the world do you mean by ‘outsourcing compassion’?” she asked.
I don’t really remember what we were talking about. Or who I was talking to. My memory is getting bad. I do remember that I had used the term sort of loosely, without realizing what I was saying until it was already out in [...]

Loving What You Love

February 1, 2010

Some friends of mine just got back from a week at two dude ranches outside of Steamboat Springs. Both ranches were outstanding – in fact, while each had their own individual spin on things, both were roughly equivalent in the quality of care they provided for their guests. And the staff at both ranches loved [...]

Happy Monday Awakeners!
I’m excited to be writing this week’s article because I get to introduce you to one of my favorite people: Ben Pasley. He’s probably best known for the Worship Circle albums. However, he’s also a teacher, pastor, and author who’s influenced a whole lot of my thinking about the church and my relationship [...]

Systems

January 18, 2010

Hello to the Awakeners,
I’ve been feeling angsty the last few weeks. I’m sure you’ve felt the same way at some point. You know you’re heading in the right general direction, but there’s that nagging thought that the compass is off by a few degrees. If you don’t factor in the course correction now, then your [...]

Four Simple Photography Tips

January 11, 2010

I’ve seen some absolutely amazing photography for non-profits. I mean eye-popping, crazy good photography. These images seem to tell the story by themselves, without needing any sort of help.
I’ve also seen some absolutely horrible photography. I mean cringe worthy, why-in-the-world-would-you-do-that-to-me bad photography. I know. Because I shot those photos.
We are a media savy world, and [...]

Finding Followers on the Journey

January 4, 2010

I have a very good friend of mine who has been a missionary for close to 10 years. I’ve always looked forward to hearing from him because he’s always sharing the story that he is a part of. It’s been a winding road for him – back and forth between the States and abroad, changes [...]
