We’re at the beginning of Awakening Followers. I’m hoping that I can help awaken you to the possiblity of fundraising without making funds the focus.
It seems a bit naive to believe that this could actually be true. Viable. Achievable. But it is. Contrary to popular opinion, life is supposed to be fun. Hard. But fun.
I want to make things as practical as possible. It can’t be all practical all the time – there are some philosophical things that I feel I need to explain in order for the rest of this to make sense – but I’m aiming to make this as applicable as possible, as quickly as possible.
The end goal of all the writing here is to help you understand and tell your story. Your story is the thing that you are (or should be) naturally passionate about. It should excite you. And your excitement is going to inspire others to join with you.
However, we need to walk through two things before we get to the specifics of how to tell your story. First, we need to create some time to tell your story. If your world is pressing in on you, then you won’t be able to think straight. You end up in crisis-mode, just trying to get through the day. The noise level of your life will be too high for your story to even register.
Second, we need to make sure that you are actually telling the right story. Telling the wrong story happens all the time. It happens when we are unknowingly misaligned with our purpose. Any misalignment needs to be straightened out before your story will make sense.
The plan is to spend the next few weeks expanding on these topics so that we have some context for the rest of this blog.
Of course, what would make this more fun (and far more scary for me) is to do all of this on a test subject. That test subject would be me. Rob and I have spent the last year working all this stuff out for ourselves, and it hasn’t been an easy process. But I want to share with you the inner workings of our experience because there’s nothing like having partners on a journey instead of just a guide book.
Our larger project is called Red Fridge Media. It’s a dream that’s taken about 10 years to realize with a good bit of confusion along the way. If you want to talk about getting the story wrong, I’ve been there. I’ve also had the rush of realization that we finally understood ourselves. We’d like you to have the same experience.
So, there you have it. I’ll be spending the next few weeks talking about Margins, Message and Method in an expanded form, and we’ll end up the year talking about how we worked through this stuff with Red Fridge Media. I’m also planning on publishing a short eBook we’ve written explaining the different ways of interacting with people when it comes to money.
I’m glad you’re with us as we embark on this new adventure.
